Highlights of the Week

Today is Feast Day of St. Jerome Emiliani, of the XVI Century, who died carrying bodies of those who had died of the plague on his own shoulders. Commemoration of St. Margaret, martyred at Antioch in 257. She is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers invoked for those about to become Mothers. MON, 21 JUL: Feast of St. Lawrence of Brindisi, Franciscan, who was involved in the crusades against the Turks to oust them from Hungary. Commemorated in the Mass is St. Praxedes, daughter of Senator Pudens, sister of St. Pudentiana, whose namesake church in Rome is one of the Stational Churches. TUES, 22 JUL: St. Mary Magdalene, whose many sins were forgiven because of her love for Our Lord. She stood beneath the Cross on Calvary and was the first to see the Resurrected Christ at the tomb. In the older rubrics of the Mass the Credo is said in the Mass, as in the Masses of the Apostles, for she had the honor of telling the Apostles that Christ was resurrected. WED, 23 JUL: Feast of St. Apollinaris, first Bishop of Ravenna, martyred for the Faith. Commemoration of St. Liborius, a Gaul, Bishop of LeMans, who established Christianity in that country in the IV Century. He died in 397. THURS, 24 JUL: Martyred at Bolsena, Italy, in 307, under Diocletian, St. Christina is greatly venerated in Italy. FRI, 25 JUL: St. James is honored in the Mass. He was beheaded in Jerusalem in 42 by order of King Herod. His relics are at Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Commemorated in the Mass is St. Christopher, Patron of Travelers, who is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, invoked in storms and tempests and against accidents in travel. He is Patron of Motorists. St. Christopher was said to be a giant who worked transporting people on his shoulders across a river. The Child Jesus was taken by the Holy Saint on one occasion, who kept getting heavier and heavier as they crossed. Finally, St. Christopher got to the other side. The Boy Jesus told St. Christopher he was so heavy as he bore the sins of mankind. SAT, 26 JUL: Feast Day of St. Ann, Mother of the BVM, one of the older Christian Feast Days.
