Highlights of the Week

Today is Feast of St. Pantaleon, martyred at Nicomedia in about 303 under Diocletian. He is Patron of physicians and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. MON, 28 JUL: SS Nazarius and Celsus, Victor I, Innocent I. Several Saints are honored on this day. I century Martyrs, SS Nazarius and Celsus were discovered by St. Ambrose in 395. St. Victor I was Pope from 189 to 198 and regulated the date ofEaster for the entire Church. St. Innocent of the V Century was one of the greatest of early Popes, contemporary of St. Augustine and St. Jerome. St. Innocent was a great champion of the primacy of Peter. TUES, 29 JUL: St. Martha, a Feast Day honoring the sister of St. Mary Magdalene, who was greatly loved by Our Lord. SS Felix, Simplicius, Faustinus and Beatrice are honored in the Mass. Simplicius, Faustinus and Beatrice were martyred in 303 under the persecution of Diocletian. WED, 30 JUL: SS Abdon and Sennen, Persians, who came to Rome about 230, were martyred for the Faith under Decius. THURS, 31 JUL: Feast Day of the Jesuit, St. Ignatius of Loyola C., XV Century nobleman who became a priest after suffering war wounds, was converted and formed the Jesuit Order. FRIDAY, 1 AUG: Commemoration in the Mass of the Holy Machabees, seven brothers martyred with their Mother in 150. Some relics in the church of St. Peter ad Vincula are believed to be those of the Machabees. SATURDAY, 2 AUG: Commemoration of St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori, who formed the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer in the XVIII Century. In the Mass of St. Alphonsus there is a commemoration of St. Stephen, who was Pope from 254 to 257 and judged the validity of heretical baptisms with St. Cyprian.
