Highlights of the Week

MON, 4 AUG: Feast Saint Dominic, of the XII Century, who fought against the Albigensian heretics, who destroyed churches, martyred priests and spread error in doctrine. St. Dominic was marked for great things in the Church. His Mother had a vision in which she saw her son as a dog carrying a torch in its mouth. In 1215 Pope Innocent III in a dream saw the walls of the Lateran Basilica collapsing but being held up by the powerful shoulders of a friar. St. Dominic founded the Order of Friars Preachers, educating the priests and monks in sound doctrine so that they were capable of fending off heresy and error. St. Dominic was especially devoted to the Most Holy Rosary to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He passed away in 1221. TUES, 5 AUG: Dedication of the Church of Our Lady of the Snow, also called St. Mary Major, containing some of the relics of Our Lord’s crib, originally built on the site in the IV Century. WED, 6 AUG: Feast Day of the Transfiguration of Our Lord. In 1457 Pope Callistus III extended the II Class Feast to the entire Church to commemorate the defeat of the Mohammadens at Belgrade. Feast commemorates Our Lord’s bright transfiguration of His Face before the Apostles Peter, James and John high on the mountain. SS Sixtus II, Felicissimus and Agapitus are commemorated in the Holy Mass. The deacons, Felicissimus and Agapitus, were executed with Pope Sixtus, and the archdeacon, St. Laurence, was executed several days later. THURSDAY, 7 AUG: St. Cajetan. Founder of the Theatine Order, the XVI Century Saint was called an “angel” at the altar and an “apostle” at the pulpit. St. Donatus is commemorated in the Mass. He was arrested in Tuscany in 361 and beheaded by order of Julian the Apostate. FRI, 8 AUG: St. John Vianney is honored in the Mass of the day. Feast was formerly celebrated on the 9th. For 42 years he was pastor of Ars, most often spent 16 hours daily in the confessional. His mortifications were noticed by the faithful who crowded the church daily. He is Patron of Parish Priests. St. Romanus, a soldier in the Roman Imperial Army, was tortured then beheaded for the Faith. SAT, 9 AUG: Vigil of St. Laurence. A Deacon, St. Laurence is famous for being roasted by the Roman torturers over a spit, then calmly telling the executioner, “Turn me over now, that side id done.” Later, he said, “The cooking is finished. Turn again now, and eat.” He died 10 AUG 258.
