Highlights of the Week
Today Feast of St. Hyacinth. A Dominican missionary, he was sent to Poland, then worked in Denmark, Sweden, and Scotland. He passed away on Feast of the Assumption 1257. MON, 18 AUG: Martyr, St. Agapitus, is honored in the Mass, martyred at Praeneste, near Rome. TUES, 19 AUG: St. John Eudes, French XVII Century founder of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, and the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, was a builder who established seminaries and conducted missions all over France, particularly promoting devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary. WED, 20 AUG: St. Bernard, born in the XI Century, devoted his hymns, prayers and Devotions in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A Cistercian, he founded the Abbey at Clairvaus which had 700 monks at its peak. The Saint founded 165 monasteries before passing away in 1153. THURS, 21 AUG: St. Jane Frances Fremiot de Chantal, who after the death of her husband, founded the Visitation Sisters with the help of St. Francis de Sales. She passed away in 1641 at Moulins, France. SAT, 23 AUG: St. Philip Benizi, a Servite brother, later was General of the Order and would have been elected Pope had he not fled the scene. He died in 1285 on the Octave Day of the Assumption.
