Highlights of the Week

MON, 25 AUG: Feast of St. Louis, King of France in the XIII Century, who built the Sainte Chapelle in Paris which housed the Crown of Thorns and relics of the True Cross. The King attended two Masses daily and felt it better to die than commit a mortal sin. Two practices which spread to the Church from his chapel: Kneeling at Et Homo factus est in the Credo and at Christ’s death in the reading of the Passion. TUES, 26 AUG: St. Zephyrinus served the Church from 199 to 217, devoted himself to battling heretics and affirming that the Catholic Church was truly guardian of the True Faith. WED, 27 AUG: Feast of St. Joseph Calasanctius, nobleman and Spaniard, Apostle of Children in XVII Century Rome. THURS, 28 AUG: Earlier a great sinner, he converted, due to prayers of St. Monica, his Mother, St. Augustine became Bishop of Hippo. As a priest, St. Augustine offered Masses for his Mother who had prayed so much for his salvation. As Bishop of Hippo, St. Augustine became one of the great theologians of the Church. He passed away in 430 while reciting the Penitential Psalms after serving 36 years as Bishop. St. Hermes is commemorated in the Mass and was martyred at Rome in about 304 during the persecution of Diocletian. FRI, 29 AUG: The Beheading of St. John the Baptist is recalled in the Mass. St. Sabina, who fell under Hadrian, between about 117-118, was honored with a church built on the Aventine over her former home which later became one of the first Dominican convents. SAT, 30 AUG: Dominican, St. Rose of Lima, was first South American Saint, was born in Lima, Peru, was known for her life of prayer, mortification, and purity in the XVII Century. Commemorated in the Mass are Martyrs, SS Felix and Adauctus, who fell under the persecution of Diocletian in Rome. Adauctus joined St. Felix in martyrdom and little is known of him.

O Most Holy God, I adore Thee, through the Adorable Sacrament of the Altar, and I offer Thee, through the holy hands of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, all the consecrated Hosts on our Altars as a sacrifice of expiation, reparation and atonement for all sacrileges, profanations, impieties, blasphemies and crimes committed against Thee through the universe. (Indulgenced Prayer)
