Highlights of the Week
Today: St. Raymond Nonnatus never knew his Mother and asked Our Lady to be a Mother to him. He gave up all he had and devoted himself In the Mercedarian Order, founded by St. Raymund of Penafort, to the ransom of Christians from Moslem captors. He himself traded his freedom to free a Christian perhaps more than once and finally went home to Heaven in 1240. MON, 1 SEP: Labor Day: Mass of VII Century St. Giles may be celebrated. A hermit from Provence, who died in 721, he is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers whose intercession is sought for relief of panic attacks, epilepsy, mental illness. Commemoration of the 12 Holy Brothers. TUES, 2 SEP: St. Stephen, first King of Hungary, known for establishing charitable institutions throughout his kingdom. His Feast day accords with the victory of the Christian armies outside Budapest over the invading Turks. WED, 3 SEP: St. Pius X, born of a poor family in Venetia, Italy, rose above and was parish priest, Bishop, Patriarch of Venice, and finally elected Pope 4 AUG 1903. He fought for purity of doctrine against the rising modernist movement, cleaned up the seminaries of subversive elements, simplified the breviary and Missale Romanum, most importantly restoring the Sunday Masses and Lenten Masses to places of prominence. The Pope established the age to receive First Holy Communion at 7 years, the age thought to be that of being able to understand that the Holy Eucharist was the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord. The Holy Pope further restored Gregorian Chant to a place of prominence in the liturgy of the Mass and Office, trying to put a halt to the theatric Masses which sometimes went on for hours and alienated the faithful. FRI, 5 SEP: St Lawrence Iustinian, XV Century Patriarch of Venice, who fought the heresies of humanism.
O Sweet Wood, O Sweet Nails, that bore so sweet a burden, save this congregation this day assembled in Thy praise, alleluia, alleluia.
