Highlights of the Week
MON, 8 SEP: Nativity of the BVM, dating from the VII Century. This date serves to fix that of the Immaculate Conception. Commemoration of St. Adrian in the Mass, who was martyred at Nicomedia, during the persecution of Diocletian, with a group of other Christians in about 303. He was highly venerated at Rome, and the old Roman Senate house became a church dedicated to his honor by direction of Pope Honorius I in the early VII Century. TUES, 9 SEP: American III cl. Feast Day of St. Peter Claver, a missionary from Spain, who came to Cartagena, Columbia in 1654, and baptized at least 300,000 slaves from Africa. He was compared to St. Francis Xavier and is regarded as special patron of Negroes. St. Gorgonius is commemorated in the Mass. Apparently, there are 2 martyrs named St. Gorgonius, both of whom were martyred under Diocletian in about 303. Although one, a Roman, is buried on Via Labicana, the other a high ranking court official at Nicomedia, the Martyrology, lists Gorgonius only once. WED, 10 SEP: Feast Day of St. Nicholas of Tolentino, founder of the Hermits of St. Augustine in Central Italy, in the XIII Century. Protus and Hyacinth, who died at Rome on an unknown date, were discovered in 1845 in Rome, whose relics are kept in the Propaganda College Chapel on the Janiculum in Rome. FRI, 12 SEP: Most Holy Name of Mary, named after 8 days by her parents, and called Mary. The Feast follows her Nativity which fell on 8 SEP. Feast was established in 1513, made universal, by Innocent XI in 1683 in commemoration of the victory of King John Sobieski over the Turks who were besieging Vienna and threatened Europe.
Thou art the light of my morning sun. The hope of my future days. The end of the strife when my sands have run. The goal of the winding ways. Thou art the one that soothes my brow in sorrow, sin and pain. Thou art the one who points above and bids me hope again. Thou art the lover that loves best. Thou art the one who knows. Thou art the sweetheart I clasp to my breast. Thou art my soul’s repose. Thou art the only constant one. Thou art the one that’s true. Thou art the one who died for me. O, let me die for Thee. Thou art the one I greet each day at six and twleve and six. Thou art the friend that’s always near. My Crucifix, my Crucifix. By M.A. Noone.
