Highlights of the Week

MON, 15 SEP: II Cl. Feast of the VII Sorrows of the BVM, formerly celebrated on the III Sunday of SEP, to the Octave Day of the Nativity of the BVM. The Liturgy recalls Our Mother’s sufferings at the foot of the Holy Cross as her Most Holy Son was crucified to open the Gates of Heaven to His children. Our Lady shares the sufferings of her Son on Calvary, the sufferings of His Holy Church, constantly crucified in an evil world. St. Nicomedes, a Roman, is commemorated in the Holy Mass. The faithful built a chapel in the cemetery on the Via Nomentana where his tomb is located. TUES, 16 SEP: Commemorated in the Mass of the day are the Martyrs, SS Cornelius and Cyprian, whose names are inscribed in the Canon of the Mass. Pope Cornelius died in exile at Civitavecchia after serving only 2 years on the Papal Throne, opposed by the first antipope, Novatian. St. Cyprian, a lawyer, became Bishop of Carthage in the III Century. He prepared the faithful for persecution and possible martyrdom before being beheaded in 258, same day Pope Cornelius’ relics were transferred to Rome. St. Euphemia, Lucy and Geminian are commemorated in the Mass. St. Euphemia, martyred under Diocletian, was highly venerated in both Rome and the East. Council of Chalcedon in 451 that defined the Divine and Human natures of Christ, as being one in Our Lord, was held in the Basilica of St. Euphemia, erected over her tomb. SS Lucy and Geminian were martyred in Rome under Diocletian. WED, 17 SEP: Impression of the Stigmata of St. Francis. On a retreat of 40 days, two years before his death, in honor of St. Michael the Archangel, St. Francis enjoyed a vision of a Seraphim with flaming wings having hands and feet nailed to a cross. St. Francis interpreted this as a sign that he would share in some way the sufferings of Our Lord. Five Wounds appeared on his hands, feet and side. THURS, 18 SEP: St. Joseph of Cupertino was a Franciscan, who glorified the Holy Cross as did St. Francis. He was first a lay brother then became a priest. Oftentimes, the Saint levitated off the ground while meditating. He passed away at Osimo, Italy in 1663. The town of Cupertino, CA is named in his honor. FRI, 19 SEP: St. Ianuarius and Companions falls today. The Saint was Bishop of Benevento and was beheaded at beginning of the IV Century near Naples, Italy. Those who were martyred with St. Ianuarius were Socius, Proculus, Eutychius and Acutius. The blood of St. Ianuarius was collected in a vial and is in the Cathedral at Naples. It is dry and in a dark lump. When placed near the head of the Martyr, the blood becomes liquid, increases in volume and is bright red. The miracle takes place three times annually: On the First Sunday of May and continuing for 9 days; during the Octave of the Saint’s Feast and on 16 DEC. SAT, 20 SEP: St. Eustace, real name Eustathius was from the East but came to Rome in the Middle Ages. St. Eustace is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers invoked for protection against fire, both temporal and eternal.
