Highlights of the week

MON, 6 OCT: St. Bruno, 11th Century hermit, founder of the Carthusian Order, devoted to penance and contemplation. Feast of the Most Holy Rosary, TUES, 7 OCT: At first celebrated on the I Sunday of October, St. Pope Pius X placed it on 7 OCT. Later. St. Mark is commemorated in the Mass. St. Mark passed away after serving only a few months as Holy Father. WED, 8 OCT: St. Bridget, who died at Rome in 1373. One of the greatest mystics of all time, St. Bridget of Sweden, was born in 1302 of royal blood. At age 10 Our Lord appeared to her covered with blood and wounds and nailed to the Cross. She asked Jesus who had treated Him so cruelly, and He replied that persons who despised Him and His Great Love for them had committed these outrages. St. Bridget was the founder of the Brigittines, having become a sister after her saintly spouse, with her consent, had become a Cistercian monk. Her daughter, St. Catherine of Sweden, followed in the holy path begun by her parents. THURS, 9 OCT: St, John Leonardi, canonized 1938, XVI Century fighter against Protestantism. Commemoration of SS Denis, Rusticus and Eleutherius. St. Denis, first Bishop of Paris, in the III Century, was beheaded with his priest, Rusticus and Deacon, Eleutherius. St. Denis is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers invoked against diabolical possession. FRI, 10 OCT: St. Francis Borgia, Duke of Gandia, a member of the Jesuits, who in 1565 became the Third General of the Society. He was canonized in 1671. SAT, 11 OCT: II Class Feast of the Maternity of the BVM, Feast commemorates XV Century of the Council of Ephesus (in 431) which conferred the title, “Mother of God,” for Our Lady. Pope Pius XI in 1931 extended the Feast to the Universal Church.
