Highlights of the Week
MON, 20 OCT: Feast of St. John Cantius, known for his extreme charity, who gave away all he owned, including his own clothing, to help those less fortunate. Once, on a pilgrimage trip to Rome, the Saint’s party was robbed by highwaymen, who missed some money sewn into his cloak, whereupon they were called back to get that money. This led to the conversion of the robbers who gave back what they had taken. He died Christmas Eve 1473. TUES, 21 OCT: St. Hilarion Abbot is honored in today’s Mass. After learning from St. Anthony in Egypt, the Saint started a monastic movement in Sicily and Dalmatia, finally passing away in 371 in Cyprus. Commemoration of SS Ursula and Companions is made in the Mass. They were martyred near Cologne, Germany at approximately the end of the III Century or beginning of the IV, by the Huns. THURS, 23 OCT: St. Anthony Maria Claret, born in 1807 in Barcelona, Spain, who served in Cuba, then participated in Vatican Council I in 1869. In 1960 St. Anthony was canonized by Pope John XXIII. FRI, 24 OCT: Feast Day of St. Raphael the Archangel, one of the seven angels ever before the Throne of God. He was sent by God to heal Tobias and guide him on his journey. Hymn of Vespers, describes St. Raphael “whose power holds the devil bound.” SAT, 25 OCT: American Feast of St. Isidore, Patron of Farmers in the US. Commemoration of SS Chrysanthus and Daria, husband and wife, who lie in the cemetery in Rome on the Salerian Way, and were probably martyred under Diocletian at beginning of the IV Century.
"The heart of man ought to break and melt with love when considering, among the numerous benefits I have bestowed on him, this one Good, the Most Blessed Sacrament. My inexpressible love has provided thee with this salutary Food."
(Our Lord to St. Catherine of Siena)
