Highlights of the Week
MON, 10 NOV: St. Andrew Avellino, native of Sicily, a Theatine devoted to the Holy Cross, who died in 1608 beginning Mass at the holy altar. St. Tryphon, Respicious and Nymphia are commemorated in the Holy Mass. TUES, 11 NOV: St. Martin, first Confessor to be canonized, and first Saint not a Martyr, who was ranked as an Apostle because of his evangelization of Gaul. A native of Pannonia, an ancient Roman Province in Western Hungary and Austria, St. Martin came to Gaul as a soldier. A catechumen, one day he gave half his cloak to a beggar, who asked for alms in name of Our Lord. Later, Jesus appeared to St. Martin and told him He was the beggar. St. Martin was baptized, received Holy Orders, performed many miracles, both before and after his death at Tours, in about 397. St. Mennas was an Egyptian martyred near Alexandria under Diocletian in about 295. His devotion spread to Rome by Egyptians. Veteran’s Day is celebrated today, and prayers for our service members, living and deceased, should be made in the Mass. WED, 12 NOV: St. Martin I. After convening a Council at Rome which condemned the Monothelite Heresy which taught Christ had no human nature, he was taken prisoner by the Emperor, Constans II first to Constantinople, later Chersonesus, where he died from ill treatment. His body was later laid to rest in the Church of SS Sylvester and Martin of Tours in Rome. THURS, 13 NOV: St. Francis Xavier Cabrini, a US/Canadian Feast Day, is celebrated with commemoration of St. Didacus, a Spaniard, who joined the Franciscans as a brother, became a contemplative, served the sick and was known for his charity. He was devoted to the Passion of Our Lord and often recited the Good Friday hymn: “Precious wood and precious nails.” The Saint passed away in 1463. FRI, 14 NOV: Mass honors St. Josaphat, a Reuthenian Rite Catholic, who sought return of the Orthodox to the Church as a Basilian monk, later Archbishop of Polotsk. The schismatics murdered the Saint to prevent him from bringing the Orthodox back to Rome in 1623. His prayer obtained the conversion of his murderers. He is a Patron of Poland. SAT, 15 NOV: St. Albert the Great. A German, born in Swabia, he joined the Order of Preachers, studied in Cologne and Paris, became one of the most prominent theologians of his and all time. He was Bishop of Ratisbon and died at Cologne in 1280. He was canonized and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1931 by Pius XI.
