Highlights of the Week
TUES, 2 DEC: St. Bibiana is an important model of purity. The daughter of a noble Roman family, St. Bibiana was delivered by the Governor of Rome to Rufinus, her jailer, to be seduced and corrupted. Placing herself in the Hands of Our Lord, St. Bibiana rejected his advances, refused to be swayed by threats and beatings. Finally, frustrated by the lack of success, the Governor ordered that the Saint be tied to a column and whipped to death by weighted lead thongs in 363. The Church built the Basilica of St. Mary Major over her tomb. WED, 3 DEC: St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit, was one of the greatest missionaries of all time and traveled to India and Japan, making many converts to the Faith. THURS, 4 DEC: Commemoration of St. Peter Chrysologus, Bishop of Ravena (433). This renowned Doctor of the Church was known far and wide for his sermons and ability to evangelize pagans. Many of his sermons have survived the passage of time. He owed his position as Bishop to a vision of the Apostle, St. Peter, to Pope Sixtus III who commanded him to place the Saint into the position at Ravena. One of the better known sayings of the Saint: “He who amuses himself with Satan cannot rejoice with Christ.” The martyr, St. Barbara, is commemorated in the Mass. St. Barbara is one of the 14 Auxiliary Saints and is invoked for protection against lightning and sudden death. She is the Patroness of artillerymen. At many military bases the statue of St. Barbara is prominently displayed in the headquarters of the artillery units. SAT, 6 DEC: Commemoration of Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor of the IV Century, St. Nicholas, honored on account of his miracles. Protestant countries have made St. Nicholas into Santa Claus. St. Nicholas, the true Santa Claus, was a holy bishop of the Church who lived a life filled with miracles in Myra.
Drop down dew, you heavens,
from above and let the clouds rain the Just One.
Let the earth be opened and bud forth a savior. (Isa. 45, 8)
