Highlights of the Week

TODAY:Commemoration of the Holy Innocents who were massacred by Herod who believed the Wise Men and priests and feared a rival who would be King of the Jews. O cruel Herod, why thus fear Thy King and God Who comes below? No earthly crown comes He to take, Who heavenly kingdoms doth bestow. (Hymn for Vespers of Epiphany). MON, 29 DEC:Commemoration of St. Thomas of Canterbury, slain 29 DEC 1170, by soldiers of King Henry II, who died defending the rights of the Church, was a shepherd who defended his sheep. TUES, 30 DEC: Commemoration of St. Sylvester Who defended the Church against Arius and his followers, deniers of the divinity of Christ. THURS, 1 JAN: Holy Day of Obligation, Octave of the Nativity and Feast of the Circumcision of Our Lord. The first Mass of the new year celebrates two Feasts, one of Jesus, the other of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Jesus immediately sheds a few drops of His Precious Blood as a pledge of His complete blood-letting later on to redeem us. By His Circumcision Jesus is marked as a victim for sacrifice, Who will take our "government upon His Shoulder" (Introit), and therefore "all the earth hath seen salvation" (Gradual, Communion). Secondly, Mary's maternity of Jesus and of us is acknowledged by the Prayer which implores her aid on our behalf to share in His Life; and for this purpose, may our sacrificial offerings (Secret) and sacramental reception Postcommunion "wash away our guilt" by her intercession.

Jesu, sweetest Child, bore in Bethlehem of the Virgin Mary, wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger, announced by Angels and visited by shepherds have mercy on us. Have mercy on us. Child Jesus. Have mercy on us. Hail Mary.
