Highlights of the Week

THIS WEEK: SUN, 11 JAN: Feast of St. Hyginus, Pope from 138 to 142, who fought heresy and was finally martyred under Hadrian. TUES, 13 JAN: The Commemoration of the Baptism of Our Lord. St. John the Evangelist relates in the Gospel that he saw the Holy Ghost descend upon Jesus, at the time of His Baptism, in the form of a Dove. It is interesting to note that at first only a few knew of Christ’s Divinity, but as the Season of Epiphany unfolds, Jesus reveals Himself step by step, according to a plan. WED, 14 JAN: St. Hilary placed in the Time of Epiphany by the wisdom of the Church as a defender of the Faith against Arianism, which denies the Divinity of Christ, an applicable example during the liturgical time when Our Lord was teaching and performing miracles to establish His Divinity. St. Felix Priest and Martyr, is commemorated in the Mass. His tomb lies near Nola in the South of Italy, and he was martyred under Decius about 259. THURS, 15 JAN: St. Paul First Hermit , who lived to age 113, near Thebes in Egypt in 341, attracted St. Anthony the Great and other early Church Fathers, to his isolated apostolate. St. Maurus Abbot, under the care of St. Benedict, was known for his obedience and is commemorated in the Mass. Once ordered by St. Benedict to save a boy who was drowning, St. Maurus walked on the waters of a lake. Later St. Maurus was sent to Gaul and established monasteries all over the country and worked many miracles by the simple Sign of the Cross before passing away in 584. In Benedictine establishments there is a proper Mass for St. Maurus. FRI, 16 JAN: Elected Pope in 307, St. Marcellus I, rebuilt the Church after persecution begun under Diocletian, while admitting apostates to the Faith to penance and reconciliation, His life was shortened by those who opposed his actions, and he is regarded as a martyr considering his shortened life. SAT, 17 JAN: St. Anthony Abbot became a hermit in the Egyptian desert at age 18, suffered much due to temptations and evil appearances by the devil which he was able to thwart by prayer. Many followers were attracted to the way of life established by the Saint. Later he fought against the heresy of Arianism with St. Athanasius, The Saint lived to age 105 when he finally expired in 356.

Pray to the Holy Family, before the crib, that tranquility and traditional morality may be restored in this land.
