Highlights of the Week

How did the custom of rose colored vestments become established in the Church? It goes back to the IV Century when the Roman Empress, wife of Constantine the Great, St. Helena, presented roses of pure gold to the heads of allied countries and important persons which were especially blessed by the Pope on this day. This became known as the Sunday of the Roses. Thus, the custom arose of wearing rose colored vestments was extended to the whole Church although the custom of giving golden roses died out. TUES, 17 MAR: Feast of St. Patrick falls today and will be celebrated in many dioceses as I Class with much ethnic joy and corned beef and cabbage and green beer. St. Patrick was a IV century Bishop who had been carried off from Britain by Irish marauders and sold as a slave. Later escaping, St. Patrick studied for the priesthood, returned to Ireland as a missionary, and spent 30 years in that country, while establishing many churches and monasteries, truly bringing Ireland into Western Civilization and the Holy Church. Pray to St. Patrick for priests and missionaries for our own country. WED, 18 MAR: Feast of St. Cyril of Jerusalem, whose job was an ancient custom of instruction of catechumens who would then be baptized on Holy Saturday. The Mass is of Wednesday After IV Sunday of Lent, with commemoration of St. Cyril using the newer rubrics. THURS, 19 MAR: Feast of St. Joseph, a I Class Feast Day and Solemnity. As such, there is no fasting or abstinence. SAT, 21 MAR: For Benedictines the Feast of St. Benedict is widely regarded as Patriarch of Western monasticism. Many joined the Benedictine monasteries as they finally spread to over 30,000 locations in Europe, many having over 1,000 monks. The Reformation and modern times have taken their toll, and one could only hazard a guess as to how many still exist today with any number of monks.
