Origin of Mass of Corpus Christi: In 1264 Pope Urban IV established the new Feast of Corpus Christi as direct result of a revelation made by Our Lord to Blessed Juliana of Cornillon, a sister, that a Feast of glory and splendor be established in honor of the Most Blessed Sacrament to combat growing disbelief in the Real Presence. The Pope requested St. Bonaventure, the Superior General of the Franciscans, and St. Thomas Aquinas, a Dominican, to submit drafts of an Office and Mass for the new Feast. On the day of the judging, done by the Pope himself, St. Thomas read his text, and tears fell from the eyes of both the Pope and St. Bonaventure who tore his own composition into shreds. Everything was perfect and beautiful and nothing remained to say. In the US, because this great Feast is not a Holy Day of Obligation, it is solemnized on the Sunday. By institution of the Holy Eucharist the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus found a means impossible to human love, that is to die for the beloved object, without separation from it. By means of the Holy Eucharist Our Lord truly dwells in our hearts, is in our midst, although veiled from our eyes. He is the companion of our exile. His Presence is multiplied across the world so that nobody is deprived of His Presence. From the tabernacle, He calls to us offering His Mercy to “...all you that labor and are burdened, and I will refresh you.” This is the great tragedy of so many churches these days closed and locked, some open with no Blessed Sacrament or tabernacle that can be observed. Yet, on Corpus Christi, we should offer ourselves to the Heart of Jesus and give him our gratitude, love and veneration. We should on this day particularly make reparation for having disregarded His loving invitations so many times, having so few times visited Him in the Most Blessed Sacrament, having so often slapped Him in the Holy Face by our coldness and infidelity. By means of the Holy Eucharist He renews Himself continuously in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with the same offering He made on Calvary on Good Friday. He is both priest and victim and is offered by the hands of His minister. The only difference between the Sacrifice at Calvary and at the Mass is the one was bloody, the other unbloody. Jesus is slain by the sword of the Consecration and His Body separated from His Blood.
