Highlights of the Week
MON, 22 JUN: Born in Bordeaux, Gaul, Saint Paulinus, was Prefect of Rome, a Senator and Consul, who was elected Bishop of Nola in Central Italy and was known for his spiritual writings and blameless life. Not commemorated are St. Marcellian, martyred at Rome under Diocletian in about 304. In 1908 St. Pius X raised his Feast Day to the ranking of a Double, today’s III Class rank. TUES, 23 JUN: Vigil of St. John the Baptist, one of the most ancient Vigils, during past times occasion for passing the night prior to the Feast Day praying and preparing for the great Feast. WED, 24 JUN: I Class Feast Day of St. John the Baptist, the only Saint, excepting Our Lady, whose birth is honored with a Feast Day. St. John was purified in his Mother’s womb and was the precursor of the Messiahs, the last of the great Prophets. Although St. John was a martyr, his Feast Day is celebrated in white vestments. His name is inscribed in the Confiteor, the Suscipe sancta Trinitas and the Nobis quoque peccatoribus, illustrating the importance with which St. John is regarded by the Church. THURS, 25 JUN: Feast Day of St. William, Abbot, founder of a branch of the Benedictines, the Congregation of Monte Vergine, in Sicily, who died in 1142. FRI, 26 JUN: SS John and Paul, whose names are inscribed in the venerable Canon of the Mass, and merit a bow at mention of their names at Mass, were executed by order of Julian the Apostate at Rome in 362. Their Stational Church in Rome is one of the oldest in the City.
Jesu, Shepherd, Bread indeed, Thou take pity on our need. Thou Thy flock in safety feed. Thou protect us, Thou us lead to the land of heavenly grace.
