Highlights of the Week
Today: St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori, great founder of the Redemptorists, whose mission was to preach in towns and cities to bring the message of Christ to the people similar to the Apostles. TUES, 4 AUG: St. Dominic, XIII Century, organized preaching crusade to rekindle the Faith and oppose heretics, some of whom were killing priests and burning churches. The Saint promoted the Holy Rosary and devotion to the Blessed Mother. WED, 5 AUG: Dedication of the Church of Our Lady of the Snow, which stands on the Esquiline Hill in Rome, built in the V Century, in honor of the decree of the Council of Ephesus in 431, which proclaimed Mary as Mother of God. Legend says a fall of snow was taken as a sign from Heaven to build the Basilica in this place. THURSDAY, 6 AUG: Feast of the Transfiguration falls, honoring battle of Belgrade in the XVI Century, which turned back the attacking Mohammadens. It is titular Feast of the Lateran Basilica. St. Sixtus II Felicissimus and Agapitus are commemorated in the Mass. In 258 Pope St. Sixtus was martyred in accordance with imperial decrees making it the death penalty to be a Christian Bishop. His two deacons, Felicissimus and Agapitus, were executed with the Pope, and his Archdeacon, St. Laurence, several days later. The name of St. Sixtus is inscribed in the Canon of the Mass, and a slight bow is made at mention of his name toward the Crucifix. FIRST FRIDAY, 7 AUG: St. Cajetan, founder of the Theatines, in the XVI Century. St. Donatus is commemorated at Mass having been beheaded in 361 during persecution of Julian the Apostate. SAT, 8 AUG: St. John Vianney, formerly celebrated 9 AUG, model priest, is honored at Mass. Pastor of Ars, France, for 42 years, the Saint spent 16 hours daily hearing confessions, practicing mortification, brought many back to the Faith.
